Sixteen Tons: A Narrative in Stickers
13 May 08A few weeks ago I got on a bus and trekked over to downtown Lansing, Michigan. Armed with “Hello My Name is” stickers I made a path around town, slapping up their distinct red and blue. I wanted to use stickering/graffiti to tell a narrative, writing a few words upon each name tag — all from the song, “Sixteen Tons.” By applying the lyrics from Tennessee Ernie Fords’ song to the walls of the city, I wanted to draw a connection between coal mining days past and the deep ties Lansing (and greater Michigan) has to the auto industry. Here’s the final result:
